A skull goblet, witches who turn into incubi, a cat playing the flute — and that’s only the first two acts! Written between 1613 and 1616, The Witch by Thomas Middleton demonstrates that the supernatural world may not be as distinct or “otherworldly” from the natural one as we might think... The actors are restricted to rehearsing with
cue scripts – scripts only consisting of an actor’s individual lines and entrances/exits, as well as the previous three words spoken, thus inciting collaboration between the actors in order to piece the text and narrative together – while adhering to many of the same staging rules that an early modern theater company would have followed.
